Security letters

You've seen those wavy letters websites ask you to retype to avoid hackers/spammers. As I was posting comments on our classmates' blogs tonight, I saw an attempt at making the procedure more accessible.

On blogger.com comment pages, there as an alternate security method that can be accessed by clicking the wheelchair picture to the right of the text box. Instead of seeing wavy letters, the commenter hears some background noise and a woman's voice announcing numbers. Go ahead and check it out by making a comment to this post.

(Go ahead. I'll wait.)

Am I alone in saying those wavy letters almost trick me every time? I really have a hard time with them. To be honest, the audio version seemed just as distracting. It seems there could better way to ensuring security. Am I being wimpy?

Wow. The sound is kind of hard to follow! Once I got the gist of it, I just listened for the clear number. An explanation or instructions would be helpful. Good observation.
